December 10th through January 30th

Opening Reception: Thursday, December 10th5 – 9 PM

Cloud Gallery is pleased to present John Bavaro: BrainTree December 10th through January 30th. John Bavaro is a Professor of Art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and his current show is based on a serious stroke he experienced from a dissected carotid artery. At the beginning he had no speech and his arm was severely compromised. A year later he created this body of work based on his brain scans and scans of his carotid artery. Although Bavaro has shown extensively, this will be his first solo show in Seattle.

John Bavaro’s process involves taking his brain scans, which he often layers one on top of another, and responds to them with “paint” using the Procreate App via an iPad. He then takes a series of “trees” that he has built in an app called TreeSketch that produces “3-D images” which are flattened, and placed in layer after layer in his images. The resulting light boxes are stunning compositions that examine the connection between the brain’s complex network and similar structures in nature.

“While working in “TreeSketch” I realized that the growth parameters of the tree behaves exactly like the physiology of the human brain. It parallels it in many ways. I was struck by the metaphor of re-wiring, or re-growth of connections that had died and now needed to be rewired.”

The opening reception will be held on Thursday, December 10th from 5 – 9 p.m.
A second reception will take place on Thursday, January 14th from 5 – 9 p.m

John Bavaro received his MFA in Painting from the University of Cincinnati.  He has previously shown internationally at the American University in Dubai, the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, i.d.e.a. Museum, Carnegie Arts Center, International Gallery of Contemporary Art, Smith College, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe/Hamburg, and the Erie Art Museum. His work has received numerous awards and is included in many public and private collections.
